The Science behind strength training: Principles of progress
Imagine walking into the gym and loading up a bar you’ve never lifted before or running a marathon without building endurance first. Without the right foundation, your body isn't prepared for that kind of stress. You'd be at risk of injury, burnout, and hitting a plateau.
Incorporating the key elements below will ensure you achieve calculated and sustainable results.
The Mind-Muscle Connection
Try tensing your bicep muscle. Now do it again, focusing on the contraction in the center of your muscle. Did you feel the difference, the centering of your mind and improved technique?
This is called the mind-muscle connection. It's the ability to focus on the contraction and stretching of the muscles you're working, which drives muscular activation and cellular growth, and maximizes gains.
Consistency and Smart Programming
Much like honing any other skill, training consistently while focusing on technique and strategically pushing your limits is the best way to achieve your desired results. You will achieve steadier, long-term progress by training 3 times a week than if you exercise sporadically. Pairing that consistency with a progressive training plan allows you track and visualize progress over time, as well as analyze and tailor that plan to best suit your needs.

Progressive Overload
Progressive overload is the method of gradually increasing the weight and quantity of reps over time.
It allows your muscles to grow at a pace that's aligned with your biology - slowly, consistently, and safely building muscle mass over time. It challenges your body and pushes you through plateaus, making it a key foundational aspect of strength training.
Recovery and Adaptation
You ever wonder why you're sore after a workout? It's because your muscle fibers tear as you are training each muscle group.
That's why rest and recovery is equally as important for building strength. You have to give your muscles time to repair and rebuild those muscle fibers so you can maximize your next session - and your fitness potential.
Prioritizing good sleep, practicing dynamic stretches, having regular rest days, and focusing on refueling are all good ways to balance out your training.
Compound Movements
Movement during exercise can be categorized one of two ways: isolated or compound. While isolated movements focus on one muscle, muscle group, or joint, compound exercises target multiple joints and muscle groups simultaneously.
This means, improving intramuscular coordination, burning more calories, and building overall strength and power more quickly.
This is also where training meets functionality because practicing these movements tangibly translates to our everyday lives... From bringing in the groceries (always in one trip) to doing weekly chores like laundry, and everything in between.
